Dearest Friends and Faithful Partners,
I’m so happy to be writing this
newsletter from our home on Jeju
Island. Helaine and I finished our year
of Korean language training in Seoul and returned to the field on 11 January
2012. I specifically delayed our fourth
quarter newsletter to celebrate this good news with you. Our family thanks all of you for the support
we received throughout this difficult experience by means of your prayers. As usual, I will allow Helaine to fill you in
on the family matters as I want to update you on our new strategy for sharing
the good news of Jesus Christ with the blue-collar workers of Jeju-do.
The Lord
provided me with a new friend and co-worker while in Seoul that is helping me
by translating the twenty (20) Bible stories which I’m developing to use for
evangelism in our three target villages.
The simple strategy is to form small groups of friends and neighbors
that are interested in hearing stories.
My theme is to show God’s plan to create a perfect community of faith
that will share eternity with Him. As
participants interact with the Bible stories they are encouraged to accept
God’s invitation to enter the community by placing their faith in His Son Jesus
and becoming a disciple of Christ.
Another
long-time friend and co-worker decided to join me on the field to assist in
training disciples to obediently follow in Jesus’ footsteps. Together we will show new believers how to
join together in small house groups to function as the local body of
Christ. These simple house churches will
be taught to use our evangelism and discipleship methods in order to reproduce
themselves in nearby villages. As the
Holy Spirit moves them to obedience we hope to see a rapid extension of His
Kingdom on Jeju this year.
Please pray
that the Holy Spirit will soften the hearts of the lost people in our three
target villages. We will concentrate our
evangelism efforts on the Haenyo (women divers) of Hado-ri, farmers of
SoGil-ri, and the tangerine orchid owners/workers in Changcheon-ri. Also, I covet your continued prayers that the
Holy Spirit will anoint my limited Korean ability to fruitfully share the gospel
message with stories. Pray that the Lord
blesses the work of my co-workers and provides us all the strength and courage
to faithfully minister God’s Word to the villagers of Jeju Island.
HAMLINE
HAPPENINGS
2011 was an
interesting year. We had lots of transitions
and changes. Our boys all got to
experience “real” school. The younger
two boys enjoyed getting to be involved in sports as well as academics. Andrew was able to take swimming classes and
participate in one swim meet. Noah was
able to take soccer and participate in one soccer tournament. It was neat to see how much they learned
during the month or two each of these programs lasted. (You can see photos on our blog)
Our older two
boys have been in boarding school this past year. This is David’s last year in high
school. He was able to participate in
APAC choir this fall which was a new experience. Daniel is in physical conditioning and
enjoying learning how to build muscle and stay fit.
We began home
schooling the younger two boys this month.
They enjoy the fact that their homework takes a lot less time, but they
really miss their friends. Please pray
for them as they make this adjustment to a place where there is a lot less
social opportunities.
Please pray
for David as he finishes his senior year and makes final decisions regarding
his future plans.
Please
pray that our family will be useful to Him as we live and work on Jeju Island.

이 소식지를 제주도에 있는 우리 집에서 쓰게 되어서 정말 기쁘기 그지 없습니다. 저와 제 아내 헬레인은 서울에서 1년 과정의 한국어 연수를 마치고 2012년 1월 11일에 제주도의 선교현장으로 귀환하였습니다. 특별히 이 기쁜 소식을 여러분과 함께 나누기 위해 4분기 소식지는 일부러 미루어 두었습니다. 우리 가족 이 어려운 시간을 보내는 전 기간에 걸쳐 기도로 저희를 응원해 주신 모든 분들께 감사 드립니다. 제주도에
살고 계시는 노동자들과 예수 그리스도의 기쁜 소식을 나누기 위한 새로운 전략에 관한 소식을 여러분께 알려 드리기 위해, 평상시와
마찬가지로 우리 가족의 활동에 관련된 내용들을 써달라고 아내에게 부탁했습니다.
서울에
머무는 동안 하나님께서는 제게 새로운 친구이자 동료를 보내 주셨는데, 그 분은 스무 가지의 성경이야기를 번역해 주셨습니다. 그 성경 이야기들은 제가 제주도 내에 세 개의 마을에서 전도활동에 사용하기 위해 핵심내용을 간략하게 재구성한 것들입니다. 이처럼 간단한 전략의 초점은 성경이야기에 흥미를 느끼는 친구들과 이웃을 작은 단위의 그룹으로 만드는 것입니다. 제가 선정한 주제는 하나님과 영원한 생명을 함께 나눌 완벽한 신앙 공동체를 만드시려는 그분의 계획을 보여 주는 것입니다. 성경 이야기에 감화를 받은 참가자들은 하나님의 초대를 받아 들여서 그분의 아들이신 예수님께 믿음을 가지며, 신앙 공동체에 참가하여 그리스도의 제자가 될 것입니다.
저와 오래 동안 벗으로서 또한 동료로서 함께한 또 다른 친구는 예수님의 발자취를 따라 순종하면서 선교현장에서 제자들을 훈련시키는 과정에서 저를 도와 주기로 결정하였습니다. 우리는
믿는 사람들이 지역적인 그리스도의 지체로서 활동하기 위해 어떻게 작은 가구 단위의 그룹에 동참할 수 있는 가를 가르치려고 합니다. 이처럼 소박한 가정 교회를 통해 인근 마을에서 새로운 신자들이 확대되도록 우리가 계획한 전도 및 제자훈련 방법을 가르칠 것입니다. 성령이
그들을 복종하게 만드시면, 우리는
올 해에 제주 땅에서 하나님의 왕국이 빠르게 확장되는 모습을 보게 될 것입니다.
우리가
목표하는 세 개의 마을에서 방황하는 사람들의 가슴을 성령께서 부드럽게 녹여 주시도록 함께 기도해 주시기 바랍니다. 우리는
하도리의 해녀, 소길리의
농부, 그리고
귤 농장 의 주인들과 창천리의 노동자들을 위한 전도 활동에 모든 노력을 집중할 계획입니다. 그리고
성경이야기에 담긴 복음을 나누기에는 부족하기 짝이 없는 저의 한국어 실력을 성령께서 북돋우어 주시도록 여러분의 기도를 간절히 소망합니다. 주님께서
저의 동료들의 사역에 축복해주시고, 제주도
주민들에게 하나님의 말씀을 충실히 전할 수 있는 능력과 용기를 베푸시도록 기도해 주시기 바랍니다.
햄라인 가족 의 근황
2011년은 참으로 활기찬 한 해였습니다. 우리 가족은 여러 번 이주하면서 많은 변화를 겪었습니다. 우리 아이들도 “멋진 학교”들을 경험하였습니다. 어린 두 아이들은 학교 공부뿐만 아니라 운동경기에 참가하는 것을 즐겼습니다. 앤드류는
수영 수업을 받고, 수영대회에도 한번 참가했습니다. 노아는 축구 수업을 받고 경기에도 참가했습니다. 한 두 달 동안 계속된 이 프로그램에 참가하는 동안 그들이 정말 많이 배운 것을 보면 참 멋진 일입니다.(우리 블로그에 사진을 올려 놓았어요.)
위의 두 아이들은 지난해에 기숙사에서 지냈습니다. 데이빗은
금년에 고등학교에서 마지막 학년을 보내게 됩니다. 지난 가을에 데이빗은 APAC 합창단에서 활동했는데, 그 애에게는 새로운 경험이었습니다. 대니엘은
체력단련 과정에 참가해서 근육 발달과 멋진 몸매를 유지시키는 방법을 즐겁게 배우고 있습니다.
이 달부터 어린 두 아이들에게 홈 스쿨링을 시작하였습니다. 그 애들은 숙제를 하는데 보내는 시간이 줄어든 것은 좋아하지만, 그래도
친구들은 정말 보고 싶어합니다. 친구들과
어울릴 수 있는 기회가 별로 없는 곳에서 적응하려고 애쓰는 그 애들을 위해 기도해 주시기 바랍니다.
고등학교에서 마지막
학년을 마치고 장래 계획과 관련해서 마지막 결정을 내려야 하는 데이빗을 위해 기도해 주세요. 우리 가족이 제주에 살면서 선교활동을 하는 동안 그분에게 훌륭한 일꾼이 되도록 기도해 주시면 감사하겠습니다.
