Newsletter #10--July 2012

Dearest Friends and Faithful Prayer Partners, I’ve been asking you to pray for the Haenyo (diving women) of Jeju for almost eight (8) years now. Team Jeju BLUE has worked diligently to discover an effective way to minister to these Jeju native women but without success. Of the six thousand registered Haenyo we’ve been unable to develop even one lasting relationship with these iconic diving women. Needless to say, this has been the greatest frustration of our work among the people of Jeju Island. However, our God is Great and faithful to answer prayer! As I mentioned in our last newsletter, I was blessed in March with the opportunity to meet Pastor Kim in the small fishing village of Gonae-ri. Together we planned a special event to recognize the Haenyo as mothers on Korean Mother’s Day in May. The Haenyo association was contacted with the invitation to attend our celebration on Saturday, 12 May. We planned to prepare a special meal of “shabu-shabu” [a delicious Mongolian dish of boiled meat and vegetables] which we would serve outdoors under a tent that I and my partner, John Wi, had constructed. At the appointed time and place twenty-eight (28) women showed up which was 100% participation by the the Gonae-ri Haenyo Association. PTL‼ Unfortunately, the “prince of Jeju” demonstrated his power by sending a destructive wind that blew down our tent. The 28 Haenyo began picking up our tables and cooking stoves with several large pots of hot “shabu-shabu” and carried everything about 100 yards into their private headquarters building. This small facility is closely guarded as the private domain of the registered divers in Gonae-ri. Seldom do they allow access to even friends and neighbors that are not Haenyo, and never to outsiders, and never ever to strange men from a foreign country that can barely speak the local language. But on this special day, these 28 women let down their defenses and opened the gate to their castle for our team to come in and enjoy their fellowship for about two hours. It was an event that I thought would never happen. Please pray that our Heavenly Father will increase my faith to see His hand moving among these women. I invite you to go to our blog and view the pictures from this exceptional day’s activity. We are currently involved in following up this initial group contact with visits to individual Haenyo in their homes. Our intent is to share our testimony and invite their participation in our “Bible Story-Telling” ministry. Please pray that the Holy Spirit will open the hearts and minds of these 28 Haenyo to the “good news” of Jesus Christ. Also, remember to give glory, honor and praise to God for His faithful answer to our prayers. HAMLINE HAPPENINGS This has been a wonderful quarter. Our oldest son, David, graduated from high school. It was exciting for our whole family to attend this special event. He plans to stay at home with us in Jeju and take on-line courses for the next school year. Daniel just completed his 10th grade year. Andrew just finished the 8th grade. Noah completed his 5th grade year. It has been a busy school year moving back to Jeju mid-year and restarting home schooling for Andrew and Noah. We are so thankful that everything came together in end to finish up on time. We couldn’t have done it without His help. PTL!!

제가 여러분께 제주 해녀들을 위한 기도를 부탁 드리기 시작한지 거의 8년이라는 세월이 지나갔습니다. 제주 블루팀 (Team Jeju BLUE) 은 제주해녀들에 대한 효과적인 방법을 찾기 위해 열심히 노력해왔습니다만 큰 성과를 얻지는 못하였습니다. 제주를 상징하는 6,000명의 등록해녀들 중에 우리와 지속적인 관계를 유지하고 있는 분은 아직 한 분도 없습니다. 두 말할 필요도 없이, 제주에서 일하고 있는 우리에게는 매우 당혹스러운 일이 아닐 수 없습니다. 그러나 우리 아버지 하나님께서는 위대하시며, 우리의 기도에 충실히 응답해주십니다! 지난 소식지에 말씀 드린 것처럼 저는 지난 ‘고내리’라는 작은 어촌에서 김목사님을 만나는 축복을 받았습니다. 김목사님 우리는 힘을 합하여 지난 5월 한국의 어머니 날을 맞아 해녀들을 어머니로 모시는 특별행사를 기획하였습니다. 5월12일 토요일 축하행사에 해녀들을 초청하기 위해 ‘고내리 해녀조합’과 사전 접촉을 가졌습니다. 저와 파트너인 존 위(John Wi)는 샤브-샤브(야채와 고기를 끓는 물에 담근 후에 먹는 맛있는 몽고요리)를 대접하려는 야외 행사 계획을 세우고 바닷가 방파제 부근에 천막을 쳤습니다. 약속된 시간이 되자 스물 여덟 분의 해녀들이 행사장소에 오셨는데, 이 숫자는 고내리 해녀조합에 소속된 해녀 전원이 오셨다는 것을 의미합니다. “하나님을찬양합시다!!” 한 가지 안타까운 일은 “제주의 왕자”인 바다 바람이 자신의 권세를 이용해서 우리가 애써 세워놓은 천막을 무용지물로 만든 것입니다. 그러자 스물 여덟 분의 해녀들은 스스로 나서서 우리가 설치해놓은 테이블, 요리용 가스레인지, 그리고 샤브-샤브를 위해 준비한 냄비 등을 들고 천막에서 100여 미터나 떨어져 있는 자신들의 건물 안으로 물건들을 옮겼습니다. 이 작은 건물은 고내리 조합에 등록된 해녀들이 사용하는 사적(私的) 인 공간입니다. 해녀가 아니면 친구나 이웃사람들조차도 접근이 허용되지 않는 곳이며, 외부인이나 제주 방언이라고는 단 한마디도 모르는 낯선 외국인에게는 말할 필요조차 없는 일입니다. 그러나 이 특별한 날에, 스물 여덟 분의 해녀들은 모든 경계심을 풀어버리고 우리 팀이 자신들의 성역 안으로 들어오도록 문을 열어주면서 약 두 시간 동안 우정의 시간을 가졌습니다. 전에는 이런 일을 꿈도 꾸어 본 적이 없었습니다. 이 여성들 사이에서 그 분의 손이 역사하시는 것을 볼 것이라는 저의 믿음이 날로 늘어나도록 하늘에 계시는 아버지께 기도해 주시기 바랍니다. 우리가 운영하는 블로그(blog)에 들어 가셔서 이 특별한 날에 찍은 사진들을 보시기 바랍니다. 현재 우리는 처음으로 접촉한 해녀 그룹에 대한 마무리 활동을 위해 그 분들의 가정을 개별적으로 방문하는 계획을 추진하고 있습니다. 우리의 목적은 이분들을 “성경이야기(Bible Story-Telling)”에 초대하여 말씀을 함께 나누는 것입니다. 성령께서 역사하셔서 이 스물 여덟 분의 해녀들이 마음을 열고 예수그리스도의 “기쁜 소식”을 받아 들이도록 기도해 주시기를 간절히 바랍니다. 그리고 여러분의 기도에 성실히 응답해 주신 하나님께 찬양과 영광을 돌리는 것도 잊지 마시기 바랍니다. 햄라인 가족 이야기 우리 식구는 4분기를 알차게 보냈습니다. 우리 장남인 데이빗이 고등학교를 졸업하였습니다. 우리 가족 모두 이 특별한 졸업행사에 참가하여 멋진 시간을 보냈습니다. 데이빗은 제주에 있는 집에 머물면서 다음 학년은 온라인 수업을 받기로 결정하였습니다. 다니엘은 10 학년, 앤드류는 8학년, 그리고 노아는 5학년 과정을 마쳤습니다. 앤드류와 노아는 학년 중간에 제주에 돌아와 홈 스쿨링을 다시 시작하면서 바쁜 한 해를 보냈습니다. 모든 일을 시간에 맞춰서 잘 마무리하게 되어 감사할 따름입니다. 그분의 도움이 아니었으면 아무 일도 못하였겠지요. “주님을 찬양합시다!!”
