Thanks so much for your prayer support for the work here in Jeju. It has been a busy month with lots going on. We were able to spend the last week with our whole family in one place as our older sons were here on spring break. This past month Helaine had an aunt and uncle pass away, and Phil's mom experienced some arterial bleeding in her intestines. We pray for the Shaw family as they have experienced the passing of many of their older generation during the past few years. We praise Him for helping the doctors find and repair Phil's mom's life threatening health problem. She is resting at home now, getting stronger everyday. We appreciate your prayers for our family as well as the ministry here in Jeju.
Here is a recent article I wrote about a new ministry.
Gonae is a small town near our house. It has a nice little harbor where there is a small fishing fleet as well as many haenyo-women divers. These women dive without any breathing apparatus. They have been the main wage-earners on this island for a hundred years or more. This life is very hard on the body as they dive as deep as they can to collect the sea life on the bottom of the ocean. Over time they develop many ailments. At one time almost every woman was involved in diving. Now there are only around 5,000 registered divers. Gonae has one of the last diving schools on the island. We are beginning a new ministry in this village. Our hearts’ desire is to be able to witness to these ladies of the sea. Generally they are shamanist in their beliefs. They fear anger and retaliation of the sea god who may be angry at them if they listen to the Good News of Jesus. A bold, cold witness just doesn’t work with them. Our plan is to begin a relationship by offering them a nice bowl of warm soup and the opportunity to hear an interesting story. We have worked on developing stories to help them understand the One True God who loves them so much that He died for them. Please pray that they will have ears to hear and eyes to see His Truth and to believe.

Dearest Friends and Prayer Partners,
We are very happy to
once again be engaged with our people group, the blue-collar workers of Jeju-do. Since our return to the field in January we
have been busy becoming reacquainted with our neighbors and the ever changing
face of this island. Tourism in Jeju has
exploded and new businesses abound.
While progress is generally positive, it can also be very threatening to
traditional culture and values. Join us
in prayer that the Lord will use these unsettling changes to weaken the hold
our adversary has on the hearts and minds of the farmers, fishermen and haenyo.
Particularly bad weather (snow and ice) during January and
February limited our contact with villagers in our target areas of SoGil-ri,
Changcheon-ri, and Hado-ri. However, God
blessed us with the opportunity to meet two local pastors that share our desire
to use innovative ways to reach native islanders with the Gospel of Jesus
Christ. One of these men, Pastor Hyun,
has provided us the chance during March to directly evangelize a group of
Chinese-Korean exchange students attending Halla University. The other man, Pastor Kim, is working with us
to develop a specialized ministry to the haenyo of Gonae-ri. Please pray for both of these new
developments by asking the Holy Spirit to guide our efforts and work in the
hearts of these people. Especially pray
that the seed planted in the students will bear fruit.
During February I was able to complete my annual week of
prayer and fasting. As an attachment to
this newsletter I’ve provide my insights from this special time with the
Lord. I encourage your participation in
a discussion of possible interpretations to a vision I received. My strongest desire is to know and obey God’s
Will. Please pray that I will receive a
double-measure of wisdom and clarity as to our future for ministry on
Jeju-do. We anticipate better weather in
April will greatly improve our ability to meet with local villagers. Pray that the Father will use my heart to
communicate His Love for the Jeju people in spite of my limited linguistic skills.
HAMLINE HAPPENINGS
The past few months have zoomed by. Helaine, Andrew and Noah made a trip to
Thailand for a home school conference.
The boys were able to take the Iowa Basic Skills Test. It showed that they were both doing well in
most areas and that there are some areas where they need to focus more. Both boys really enjoyed getting to meet new
friends and spend time in some nice warm weather. Unfortunately, it seems that we brought home
more than our luggage. We all got very
sick within 24 hours of arriving home.
We had flu shots, but evidently we found a flu that wasn’t included in
our shots. We are now all over it and
enjoying breathing well again. This week
is spring break so with David and Daniel home we are able to be together as a
family again. It is hard to believe that
there are only about two months of school left.
David will celebrate his graduation from high school on May 25th. He is taking three IB courses so he has IB
exams next month. Please pray for David
as he takes exams, finishes up at school and makes plans for his future. Please pray for our others sons to finish
their school year well also.
Helaine has begun to teach two Bible studies/English classes
this month. Pray that the students will
grow in their faith and knowledge of Jesus as they study.

돌아와 다시 노동 현장에서 일하고 계시는 분들과 함께할 수 있어서 기쁘기 그지 없습니다. 1월에 제주에 내려온 이래 우리는 언제나 변화 무쌍한 이 섬의 모습과 이웃들을 만나 사귀느라고 매우 바쁜 시간을 보냈습니다. 제주의
관광업은 활기를 띠고 새로운 사업들이 왕성하게 일어나고 있습니다. 일반적으로 이런 발전에 긍정적인 면이 있다고 말할 수는 있지만, 다른 하편으로는 전통적 문화와 가치에 위협이 되는 것도 사실입니다. 그리스도의 적들이 농부, 어부 그리고 해녀들의 마음속에 자리잡은 세력을 무너뜨리기 위해 하나님께서 이런 변화를 사용해주시도록 기도하는데 여러분도 동참하시기 바랍니다.
특히 1월과 2월에는
눈과 비로 인한 나쁜 날씨로 우리가 목표로 하는 소길리, 창천리
그리고 하도리의 마을 사람들을 만나는데 어려움이 많았습니다. 그러나 하나님께서는 이 지역에 시무하고 계시는 두 분의 목사님을 만날 수 있는 기회를 주셨으며, 우리는
그분들과 이 섬의 주민들에게 복음과 그리스도를 전할 수 있는 보다 참신한 방법을 찾아내려는 열정을 나 눌 수 있게 되었습니다. 두 분의 목사님 중에서 현정남 목사님께서는 한라대학에 다니고 있는 한-중 교환 학생으로 이루어진 그룹에 대해 3월 한달 동안 직접 복음을 전할 수 있는 기회를 주셨습니다. 그리고
김태호 목사님께서는 우리와 함께 고내리의 해녀들을 위한 선교활동에 특별한 전략을 구성하고 계십니다. 성령께서
우리의 노력을 바른 길로 인도해 주시고 이분들의 가슴 속에서 역사하도록 간구하시면서, 이 새로운 두 가지의 발전 모두를 위해 기도해 주시기 바랍니다. 특히 교환 대학생들의 가슴에 뿌려진 씨앗이 열매를 맺도록 기도해 주시기를 간청합니다.
2월에는 제가 연례행사로 정한 일주일 금식기도 기간을 무사히 마칠 수 있었습니다. 이 뉴스레터의 부록에서 보시겠지만, 저는 하나님과 함께하는 특별한 시간을 통해 저만의 통찰력을 기를 수 있었습니다. 제가 받은 비전에 대한 여러 가지 해석의 가능성을 논의하는데 여러분께서 동참해 주시기를 기대합니다. 저의 가장 큰 소망은 하나님의 뜻을 깨닫고 순종하는 것입니다. 제주 선교의 미래와 관련해서 두 배의 지혜와 명쾌한 응답을 받을 수 있도록 저를 위해 기도해 주십시오. 4월에는 날씨가 좋아져서 우리가 마을에 나갈 때마다 많은 사람들을 만날 수 있기를 기대합니다. 제한적인 언어능력에도 불구하고 제가 이 지역 분들과 그리스도의 사랑을 나눌 때 하나님께서 저의 뜨거운 가슴을 사용하시도록 기도해 주시기 바랍니다.
햄라인 가족 이야기
지난 몇 달은 화살처럼 빠르게 지나갔습니다. 헬레인, 앤드류 그리고 노아 가 홈 스쿨링 회의에 참석하러 태국에 다녀 왔습니다. 두 아이는 아이오와洲 기본학력
시험(Iowa Basic Test)을 치를 수 있었습니다. 아이들은
대부분의 영역에서 좋은 성적을 거두었지만, 좀 더 신경을 써야 할 부분도 있었습니다. 정말로
두 아이 모두 새로운 친구를 만나고, 따듯한
날씨에서 보내는 시간을 즐겼습니다. 다만, 안타까운
것은 우리가 태국에 가지고 갔던 가방 내용물보다 좀더 많은 것을 담아온 것입니다. 제주 집에 돌아 온지 스물 네 시간도 안되어 모두 심하게 아프기 시작하였습니다. 가방에 병균이 담아 온 듯합니다. 독감에
처방되는 주사를 맞았지만, 아무래도
태국 독감에 대한 주사로서는 적당하지 않은 듯합니다. 이제 우리 식구 모두 완치되어서 건강하게 지내고 있습니다.
이번 주에 봄방학을 맞은 데이빗과 다니엘이 집에 돌아와서 오래 만에 가족끼리 단란한 시간을 보낼 수 있었습니다. 이제 학교에 다니는 기간이 단 두 달 정도 남았다는 것이 믿어지지 않습니다. 데이빗은 5월 25일에 졸업식에 참석할 예정입니다. 그 애는 현재 국제 학사 과정(International baccalaureate) 을 마치고 다음 달에 IB시험을
치르게 됩니다. 시험을 치르고, 고등학교를 마치며, 장래를 위해 계획을 세우고 있는 데이빗을 위해 기도해 주시기 바랍니다. 다른 아이들도 남은 학년 기간을 잘 마칠 수 있도록 기도해 주십시오.
이번 달에 헬레인은 두 개의 성경공부 /영어 수업을 시작하였습니다. 수업을
통해 학생들의 예수 그리스도에 대한 믿음과 지식이 성장할 수 있도록 기도해 주시면 감사하겠습니다.
